What if you never knew about a letter someone had written for you and you after receive it after 20 years
This line encaptures the imagination of anyone who reads it. It a classic case of what if —what if it happened as the author describes, what if it can save a life of a person, what if it is from a loved one, what if it is from your mentor….
Can words written on a piece of paper change the life of people to whom they are addressed to? This is the idea that the author, J. Alchem explores in his book.
The story is simple; a couple Aron and Sara are in the process of shifting home when Sara finds Aron’s bag with 9 undelivered letters which Aron had forgotten to deliver during his career as a postman. Now twenty years later, it is upon him to deliver those letters, and he does it with absolute honesty, extreme earnestness, and a bit of fear too.
In this short novella of 70 odd pages, the author has written 3 stories with great sensitivity, taking time to explore the different parts of human life. Each narrative takes a separate emotion and weaves a poignant tale which resonates through the soul. The stories speak of warmth, of feelings, of love, of forgiveness, of respect.
Whether it is a wife and child waiting for the long lost husband/father, whether it is a falsely convicted man getting a way to procure justice, or a right path shown to a young boy who goes on to achieve great success, each is a different take on a human life which can feel so many varied emotions. Each story has a common theme of waiting but dealt in a heartrending way.
As usual there are a few niggles, I felt the writing could be slightly better, a slight maturity is needed in the writing. Also the stories were not complete, they portrayed emotions but left questions behind. They were not well developed as individual stories, too many unanswered threads, which left me with an odd feeling of abruptness
But one cannot deny that the book as it is, is extremely powerful too. Such is the power of words and such is the penmanship of the author J. Alchem who has gone over and beyond the words to give us a story filled with emotions, to show us words matter whether it is on a page as a letter or on a pages as a novel.
